Please don't hurt me. I know that this was done on OCN but it's still a good thing to have, and if Avicus does have one, then it hasn't been posted on in more than three months.
I have all sorts of experience in tech. I've worked on computers since age five. I haven't yet met a computer that I wasn't able to fix. Here, I will help you through technological glitches, common or uncommon. It doesn't have to be directly related to Avicus, or even Minecraft. I can help with software and hardware issues. Anyone that knows what they're talking about is more than welcome to help me out; I'm a very busy person in real life as well as on Avicus so I won't always be able to reply to all issues right away but I will certainly do my best!
Opinion on Cherry MX switches, and what type should I get? I'll be using mostly for gaming, but there will probably be some typing as well. Should I go Brown or Blue?

Definitely the blue. I don't have those exact switches (I have the Razer BlackWidow Chroma and they engineer their own switches) but moving from non-clicky to clicky has improved typing in general and I'd never go back.
Up until September of 2013, I had almost no experience in Mac computers but then the school got some. I'd now say that I'm capable of giving support for Macs (in fact, I'm writing this post on the school MacBook Air.) I work in the tech office at my school all summer each summer since the summer of 2013 and I know enough to help out.

Nice! If you need any help with Macs, ask me as well. I can fix most software issues, but hardware is a bit of a trouble for me. I also work in Tech Support for my school. I only work with Macs.
What PC would you recommend me? (Not custom, one that's already made) I have like 1000$ US.
you blow wanna $1000 on a PC, no no no. My comp was $650 it works very well. Specs: Ram : 8gb processor : Intel core i3 (i would go with the i5) GPU : navidia 630 STI Motherboard : 120Gb solid state I made it myself which was a lot cheaper. My comp can get 300 fps in Minecraft (but i put it on vsync), even in nebula and 200 on CS:GO. just my suggestion!

XD I blew through $2500 on mine but it's worth every penny

Brown is better for osu! while still good for typing.
I'm in need of a wireless-gaming mouse. Try to keep it under $50 preferably. Thanks!
If you go on Ebay, people have "buy it now" Logitech G602s and Logitech G700S's for around $50. They're refurbished, which normally is pretty good. I don't own either, but from what I've heard the G700S seems to perform better, but has an awful battery life (I'm told around 6 hours.). However, it can go wireless or wired. It goes from about 250dpi to 8200dpi.
The G602 has much better battery life, clocking in around 250 hours; however, there are fewer programmable buttons, and it only goes from about 240dpi to 2500dpi.
Alright I got some questions. Thanks for making this btw :D
What power supplies would be compatible with the Gateway DX4300-22 computer? Like does it only have to be the one that comes with it?
What can I do to reduce lag on minecraft besides using optifine, changing settings, and setting java to high priority? (Have 4GB Ram btw.)
1. All you need is any power supply 300W or over. I recommend this: Rosewill RD500-2SB
2. RAM actually has very little to do with Minecraft lag. Of course, it's always helpful to have more RAM, but you'll really see improvement with a better GPU. I understand that for many people that's not an option, and for laptop users it's generally impossible, but that's what will give you real results. 4GB of RAM is more than enough to run Minecraft successfully. Other than that, the best things you can do are a) close other open programs, and b) make sure that your computer is set to "High Performance" (Start->Control Panel->Power Options).
This is a great idea. Thanks for doing this! I have a problem which has been troubling me for a few weeks:
Do you know much about Cyanogenmod and/or smartphones? If so, do you know how do you link up buttons so that you can control the Cyanogenmod11 operating system (To set the volume, shut down, and all that normal phone stuff)?
My first custom built phone didn't have any hardware buttons; only three onscreen buttons and power gestures, so that worked perfectly. When designing my second, I decided to scrap the software buttons and instead add three capacitive buttons for the OS navigation, and three tactile buttons for the volume rocker and power. I connected my capacitive touch sensor pad to five GPIO pins on my CPU, which picked up the signal fine. I couldn't seem to figure out how to make this trigger such OS functions as volume and power, though.
Any help would be greatly appreciated. I feel like I'm gonna give up :c

Gosh, that's so far out of my realm. I have like 1 day experience with Cyanogen so I'm sorry I doubt I can be of any help with this.

A good build. And technically, you can overclock it, but it's multiplier isn't unlocked so you can't go very far at all.
And yes, people need to be made more aware that it's not as daunting as task as it may seem to build a computer.
on a serious note though, i need a relatively powerful laptop that can run cs:go, lol and mc. Preferably something that i can get high FPS with while recording. And do not cram down my throat BUILD YOUR OWN PC because the portability is a must in my situation.
Anyone that has asked me for a computer build/recommendation: I'm getting to that. I have all of your names on a board and I'm going to do it as soon as possible but I'm really far behind in my classes so I have to fix that first.

Video card and HDD don't need to be that high end, you can just go for the cheaper models such as the WD blues and a lower 960. And what's so bad about a BIOS update?

It's actually smart not to take a BIOS update unless something is going wrong. BIOS updates are dangerous in the fact that if they go wrong, you're basically out a motherboard (unless you have a dual BIOS system).

Ok, Im honestly done, "Video card and HDD don't need to be that high end".
Tbh, you don't know me, how much money I have, If I have the money, I will go out and buy the best GPU possible for my budget. Idk why you even bother saying this, in my eyes this is completely retarded.
Oh and I haven't seen a $100 or that kind of card run Shaders + recording at 60 fps with shaders other than the GTX 960, maybe the 750 Ti can pull it, but I doubt it.

Whoa, man, chill. 750 Ti can pull anything. That's truly your best bet here.
NEVER use the word "retarded" in any way except to mean mentally retarded, as in the actual disease.

"a lower 960" I would recommend reading a post properly before attempting to insult someone.
You clearly have no intention of overclocking, as shown by your choice of a non k series 4690, and as such, it was inferred that you don't require the cooling capabilities of the Strix model 960. The Strix has great cooling capabilities, yes, but a) there is no point in them if you're staying at stock speeds. b) you're paying a premium for those capabilities.
Also, with the savings on the motherboard that I mentioned, the 960 could be upgraded to a 280x.

How much better is the 280x? (Not the best with AMD cards)

15-20%. Not that much of a difference in most games, usually about 10 frames, but in games that use more VRAM, the 2080x has an extra gigabyte on top of the 960 which helps in those games.
It will perform better in nearly every game, albeit by a small margin. But if you're looking for the best GPU within your budget, it's the way to go.

Good choices. One last thing is that if you're looking at the 970, also be sue to check out the 290. Has a few advantages as well as disadvantages, either of which could impact you.
I don't know if this would go on this post but: Do you know how to use Twitch? I need some help with putting the box that shows you the songs that are currently being played but I don't know how to do it, can you help me?

Ah, I am not equipped to help you there. But I'm sure that there are many able-bodied users who will rush to your help any second.
Correct me if Im wrong. Minecraft is kinda based on the processor, not saying you don't need a good GPU to run it, but the processor does some of the main things, saying that, ram is important, for minecraft I think 4 will be fine, but 8 is probably your best choice.

That computer is still nice for a budget build :P
If you have a GPU, the GPU takes over some of the processing that would be done by the CPU in its absence. The CPU has a miniature GPU in it (called integrated graphics), which is good, but if there's another GPU, it will take over as it will almost certainly be more powerful. Having a good processor is really only a necessity in this case if there's no supplemental GPU. 4GB of ram should be fine.

Minecraft isn't just about graphics, you do realize that?

I'm very aware of how Minecraft works. What I'm saying is that processors today work at much faster speeds than most programs can realize, and the best investment for a Minecraft machine would be a mid-range CPU and a mid to high-end GPU. It only becomes more important to have a high end CPU if you don't have a separate GPU to help it.
So im getting a new computer... custom built and have a budget of like £500 (just an idea doesnt matter if it ends up being more)
So my question is what spec should i order... ram cpu graphics card etc. in order to maximise gaming performance only... dont care about anything else xD

When I record, I get frame drops and such. I want you to help me configure my settings, I am using cracked action version, and these are my computer specs:
NVidia GTX 630
I want to record at 120 fps if possible, and I want to configure my computer & recording software & minecraft settings correctly to record with high frame drops and make it look smooth. I am pretty sure it's the recording itself and not the editing.

"important to have a high end CPU if you don't have a separate GPU to help it"
Nope. If the GPU is a bottleneck, a better CPU will not help anymore than it would if the GPU were not a bottleneck.

Minecraft will run fine with 2gb of ram installed. 4gb will be more than enough if you want other programs running as well.

For a solely minecraft machine, you looking at the lowest end of modern CPU's and a low-mid range GPU.

at the moment, i only play minecraft, but thats just because this laptop cant handle anything else at all. however with my new computer i will probably get into other games such as dota 2 because i have a load of friends that play it....
Macs make your FPS in Minecraft usually increase. It's good for gaming because it has a face camera, recording software and a microphone(not really the best). It's good for PvPing but if you like block-hitting, I'm afraid you can't with a Mac Mouse. You can jitter click as well. It takes a while to get use to it.

Oh god no.. "Recording software" definitely the best!!!!

why would it matter anyway out of interest?
Different games require different things to run. Minecraft and dota are both pretty easy to run compared to other games. And I forgot to ask, what country are you in as prices vary a lot country to country.

So, things irrelevant to gaming. Windows offers free recording software, and cameras and mics are cheap.
Doesn't make them beneficial to gaming. Anything you get on a Mac that you don't on a PC, you're paying a massive premium for, especially when it can be bought cheaply for a pc.

Nice! If you need any help with Macs, ask me as well. I can fix most software issues, but hardware is a bit of a trouble for me. I also work in Tech Support for my school. I only work with Macs.
I have a question. It doesn't really go with the discussion but i want to know how to post a discussion. Thanks! Anything helps.

I'd like to go back to this old post.
How do their switches feel to you?
How does the build quality feel?
I've heard about their switches being inconsistent- any comment?
Finally, what would you give it a grade out of 10?
Am back for more help. Since 2/3 USB ports are being dick heads I can only use one port for my mouse. Any way to get it fixed without replacing them? I tried my mouse USB as well as my external keyboard, non of those 2 are working. The USB's are wiggling really easily if I do wiggle it.
If no way to fix it without replacing any way to fix a key from a keyboard? Recently my "w" key has decided to stick a lot (I hold it down for a bit, and it either sticks and makes my MC character walk forward without having to push it or it doesn't move my character at all and I can't move it forward. Just saying every other one of my keys work perfectly fine.

The USB port problem sounds like a driver issue, open up Device Manager and see if there are any warning signs. You can try cleaning out your keyboard to see if it fixes the key sticking thing.
My hard drive is becoming increasingly slow on my gaming laptop - is an SSD worthy to replace it with/is it hard to do on a laptop? I've some experience with PC's - but not enough to make an educated decision - and that's why im asking for help ;)

Doesn't even recognise them :P Oh well, I have a USB hub and I fixed the key by breaking the rubber cap off acidently xd
Depends on the laptop you have. For me you just take out the battery > Take off the plate, where the fans are things are. > Disconnect the drive cage > Replace the HDD with an SSD > Put it back in the orientation the hardrive was in (Sata and Power connectors at the same spot) > Get my old drive, and copy all the data to my SSD using Wester Digital's cloning program, (Works only with WD hdd's)

Well there's your issue, you lack chipset drivers which is why your system does not recognize most of your ports. Try finding your motherboard manufacturer's website and install the correct chipset drivers or your external devices will not work well and might start having weird issues.

Well, hard drives do eventually wear out as they become older. You can try using CrystalDiskInfo to see the status of your hard drive. Laptop storage replacements are not exactly the easiest thing to accomplish, but there are plenty of tutorials on the internet that you can watch and follow along, and learning how to work with computer components really doesn't seems too hard to me.
is anyone still here to give tech support? i am in great need of assistance to save my minecraft experience from lag. thanks :)
Give as much detail as possible! Ill give you a few you can easily tell me :)
Are your Minecraft settings at their lowest? Yes / No? PC Specifications? If you're having a hard time figuring this out, download and install Intel's Extreme Tuning Utility (https://downloadcenter.intel.com/download/24075/Intel-Extreme-Tuning-Utility-Intel-XTU-). Just mess around in there, until you find your PC specifications. (Unless you're on a MAC or iOS device, in which case I cannot help you.) If done, please post them :) Any Idea of software that you do not want running? [Post them]
That's basically it :P I'll wait for your response.
For some reason my microphone is not being picked up by the computer and I am not sure whether this is a technical issue but I do know that it is not the headphones. They work fine when skyping off a phone or something so it must be the computer. I don't know whether anyone checks this thread anymore but help would be much appreciated.

My desktop is the Optiplex 790, it is not very good but it is all that I have :).
My mic did the same the wires in the mic got damaged somehow by the movement, yet the headset still worked with sound. Maybe try returning it? If the warranty is still valid.

Yeah same except my mic still works when plugged into a phone or something else. It is only the computer. Maybe the extension split cord thing is broken?

It could be the microphone jack on your PC. Maybe try plunging it in and seeing if you can select it in the options.
Not sure why, but around about an hour after launching minecraft, I time out. Then after that I can't reconnect and need to restart my PC to access any server.

Anyone know what I could do?
Sounds like one of those issues that are only temporary. Maybe it'll go away soon. It'd also be good to think about what you changed on your computer right before these issues occurred.
Is there anyway to make my fps go up? I have a Mac and I get around 40-60 fps which is pretty good for me but I wanna see if I can get it higher. Anyway I could do so?
Well for some reason most times I to my screen goes black and takes 5 minutes to says disconnected it's pissing me off, for some reason when I pull back a bow I get like 2 fps, how can I get higher fps on a Mac? And thanks : 3

I have a HP laptop with Intel Core i5 and 6GB of RAM and I don't get more than 15 fps in minecraft with render distance at 4 chunks, clouds and everything off, and I must say it's really laggy and it drives me nuts. How do I make my laptop get more than 30 fps? (I have already tried OptiFine, x8 resources packs, Extra RAM and all that stuff by the way)

Your CPU is probably not very strong, along with Integrated Graphics instead of a dedicated GPU. Laptops tend to have these problems, which is why they usually aren't made for Gaming, even in a block game.
It helps some people. It doesn't for most people though.
Can confirm that this does wonders for me--for whatever reason, if I haven't allocated less than 4GB to MC, I can't even load a SP world. Have not been able to figure out why for several years now.
