Word filter? (No, not making swears into *'s) by Petlas April 18, 2015 at 12:04 AM UTC

I have a distinct feeling that part of the reason that Avicus is losing players is because of all the rage being thrown about, and in this midst of this rage is excessive swearing. I remember on an old server I played on, they used to filter words such as 'shit' into a word with a bit of humour. They even translated 'lag' to 'kittens'. If this feature was added in, it might restore some of the children players who decided to quit because of all the rudeness and even some others.

steven5703 April 18, 2015 at 12:04 AM UTC

+1, but I don't think words like "lag" or "hacks" should be translated

scolton April 18, 2015 at 12:04 AM UTC

I had this on one of my old servers and I've been trying to promote it.

I was just using the 'lag' filter as an example. x)

I totally agree with the 'Lag' Filter.

toketrain April 18, 2015 at 1:04 AM UTC

hacks should be implemented! and all variations of it. because then the hackers might not realize and might not have to turn it off and thus staff wil have evidence to ban them

kycrafft April 18, 2015 at 1:04 AM UTC

No. People will just find a way to bypass it. This happened last time there was a filter. Maybe after someone says "lag" or "hacks" a message is sent to them saying

"Tip: Remember not accuse others of hacks. Use /report instead" or
"Tip: Remember, if it is lagging do not spam 'lag' "

SnowSX3 April 18, 2015 at 3:04 AM UTC

It would still create unnecessary spam in chat.
Not to mention, it will confuse a lot of players. (especially newer ones)

Well, isn't it better to try to stop it than to let it be?

Zedther April 18, 2015 at 5:04 AM UTC

How about instead of censoring, Avicus has one of those things where if you type in a message with a swear word, it doesn't actually send and instead has some message like "Do Not swear in chat"
The same would go for hacks "Do not publicly accuse others of hacks, use /report instead"
Not only is that easier, but it would lessen the infraction rates...
And before you say it, it would also bring up the message if someone tried to avoid this function, example sh it, fu ck
sh1t, and a55 would all not be sent :P

I fucking hate you!
I love you so much!
?

Legoche April 18, 2015 at 9:04 AM UTC

Yeah! Its a great idea! Except hard to implement, we had it before and for example

"Lets rush it" was blocked.

Burningtaco_224 April 18, 2015 at 9:04 AM UTC

It's a good idea because people have been banned (me and others) just for exercising their freedom of speech A.K.A swearing and the reason the server is losing players is because i'm sure a lot of the people have been banned for swearing and other things.

Notalgicular April 18, 2015 at 9:04 AM UTC

Nahh...
People should be able to say what they want. Anyone over the age of 10 swears anyway (atleast where I live) so I doubt people really care

thank you finally someone agree with me because THIS IS THE SHIT THAT GOT ME BANNED

according to your infractions, your dumb acts of rudeness landed you in far more trouble than just "swearing".

all my "rudeness has been swearing and well it sure its got me tempbanned, kicked, and banned but that's just swearing and yes i know ive been tempbanned for going to the survival world in game but inst exploration a good thing

BoldAndBrash April 18, 2015 at 11:04 AM UTC

Being rude to people is just being a jerk, not "exercising your freedom of speech."

Also, as long as you don't swear at people or you don't swear every 2 seconds, you're fine.

kycrafft April 18, 2015 at 11:04 AM UTC

There will be no need to bypass it because it won't do anything to the message.

toketrain April 18, 2015 at 9:04 PM UTC

people would still figure out a way to say the word without saying the exact phrases that get the message sent to them. it might be on a smaller scale but they'll do it.

SWEET_Johny April 18, 2015 at 10:04 PM UTC

Or we could just keep what we have. Plus, bypass isn't going to be hard.

kycrafft April 18, 2015 at 10:04 PM UTC

They probably wouldn't care to much anyway. Their message goes in-censored. Plus, who knows, it might help with some of the newer players who don't know these  things.

PokerFace April 18, 2015 at 10:04 PM UTC

Well, bypassing it would make your swearing look lame and less offensive. Take this for example,
F.u.< K You!

This would be hard to read and,  I would be laughing so hard that they're such a try hard at swearing. Plus, people would need to retry their swearing at the moment because natural instinct is to type it grammatically correct and, it's hard to break a habit to spell wrong. It would be lengthy and to be honest, I'm sure everyone would rather just play the game.

Last time there was a chat filter it didn't really work out all that well. It was bypassed with minimal effort.

Well then, we can simply come up with a list.

People do really care.  I wasn't allowed to play Minecraft for a long time when my mother saw what was being said in chat.  If you want to say this stuff, scream it at your computer in real life as opposed to typing it in the chat.

It's just a game, no need to scream it in real life, or even say it. Saying it in chat is fine.

DarthRaysty April 19, 2015 at 12:04 AM UTC

This should be implemented soon.

scolton April 19, 2015 at 12:04 AM UTC

Saying it in chat isn't fine.  It's offensive to people in game, especially if it is directed.  I'm all for free speech, but when you're in a game online with people that may be younger than you, it's important to consider everyone around you.

I agree that it's just a game and there's no need to scream it in real life; games just don't make me mad.  I was simply saying that that was a better alternative to saying it in chat.

It's a video game, with random people, it shouldn't offend you. Also, if some people can't handle a bit of swearing, they shouldn't be playing Minecraft.

We're trying to be inclusive, not restrictive.  We're trying to attract people by keeping things as non-offensive as possible, which at this moment includes not swearing.  To say that, "if some people can't handle a bit of swearing, they shouldn't be playing Minecraft," doesn't make sense.  Minecraft was designed as a game of building and surviving.  Nowhere in the game description was it mentioned that users should be restricted based on offensive language.

scolton April 19, 2015 at 1:04 AM UTC

I'd also like to mention that I swear all the time in real life.  But that is under different circumstances.  All of the people are my age, I don't do it to offend anyone, and I know that everyone around me is okay with it.  But in Minecraft, these conditions can't be evaluated as easily, and it's near impossible on a large server like Avicus.

Honestly, I don't understand why people take time out of their lives to rage in chat.
In reality, all they're doing is spamming a few keys to emphasise that they're angry...

What does that accomplish?

They achieve nothing but they love for everyone to know their raging at someone/something like for Example: a Bowspammer

so there have been a lot of pitches for world filters right? well i instead of being like Those Other Servers, AVICUS gotta be be different. this word censor would revolutionize the way words such as f*ck, sh*t, p*tato, h*ck, and some other words changeing the world once step at a time.

Mineplex have 5 year olds running around 24/7. They probably put a damn load of time into implementing their filter.

+1, I see so many people cussing in game ;-; gets really annoying seeing "FUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCCKKKKKKKKKKKKKKK"
(Yes, it is like that a lot of the times)
But like Zedther said, anyone types and presses the enter button any swear word/inappropriate word(s) then it would not send and then the console would send a private message to the player to watch his language. Would help a LOT.
Until then /report will be the best hope.
