You could either run it off your own computer, which I highly do not recommend since it could be a security issue with your computer and internet if someone decides to hack the server. It could also run really slowly if your computer isn't powerful enough nor will it be 24/7 unless you leave your computer open 24/7 with no restarts.
Usually using a host is best. I've used in the past hostehorde and ggservers.
Hostehorde is good if you are looking for one server, no bungee. If you want a bungee ggservers is pretty good.
As Vlad said do not use your computer to host a server especially a public one. But if your wanting to start a public server I would suggest MCProHosting, I have used MCProHosting multiple times mostly for Modded Survival Let's Plays I would definitely commend that to you.
It's a little more than just 'create a gmail account'
Well yeah of course but to actually be able to start a channel means that you need to have a gmail. Basically it's just the first step :P
