I was under the impression that it was coming out with the 1.8 update, but that obviously didn't occur. I don't think name changing is necessary, but some people are obviously keen for it otherwise they wouldn't be doing it!  =)

In the 1.7.9 update notes, Mojang states that "We have pushed out an update that supports name changes, however we will not allow name changes until a future date."

So name changes are already supported but Mojang does not want to release it just yet.
