What to use for your Minecraft! by _Phyre December 2, 2014 at 3:12 AM UTC

Ok, So i've seen a lot of threads lately
"What screen recorder do I use?"
"What is a lagless or perfect recording software?"
"Whats a good editing software?"
etc.

And before you say "DoctaPop has this thread". He does, but he doesnt list what kinds of recording softwares are best for your PC. He might, but nobody asks.

Helping me with the thread: If you are experienced and use programs that are good, please inform me in the reply's.

(Again not an expert, but I just want to make this thread to help people who might need it, and to save some forums space ;))

Lets get into it I guess!:

Screen recorders:
Fraps:
      Recommended Settings:
                                               Bitrate: 2500 - 4500
FPS: 30 (Bad PC) FPS: 60 (Decent PC)
                                               Custom FPS: 60+ (Good PC)
                                               Audio Encoder: Bitrate - 320
                                                                        48Hz
CPU Usage / x264 - Low (Low quality and framrate) [For bad PC's]

 DxTory:
[No further Information] Settings at what ever pleases you.

 OBS (Open Broadcasting Software)

Not much CPU usage if encoded properly
Best used with AMD, NVIDIA gpu's
File Sizes: (Depends on the compression Buffer)
Not much Power usage (If on a laptop, recommended to be plugged in for maximum performance
OBS icon: http://bit.ly/11LZMBv

                                              Recommended Settings:
Bitrate: 5000 (Using GTX graphics) 3500 - 4500 (Using AMD or any other)
FPS: 60 (With a Bad PC it works
Audio: 320, 48Hz
Encoding: x264
CPU preset: Veryfast
Allow 61 - 120 fps entry: Yes

(Recommend more stuff, and More stuff will be added as this thread goes.)

Cinny's Suggestions:

QuickTime Player
  • Comes with every new Mac (free)
  • Easy User Configuration
  • Very little user customization features
  • Lags a lot on most computers.
This is generally not what you want to use. However, I do know some people who can still use it with a decent frame rate.

Screenflick
  • Around $30 USD
  • Easy-To-Use User Configuration
  • Good amount of features
  • 60fps recording capabilities
  • Lag-Free (I use it, currently)
This is what I use for my channel, and it works as a charm. My only regret is using iMovie as my editing software, because it can't export anything above 30fps :L

Screenflow
  • $99
  • I found it very confusing, but it is quite intuitive to use once you are used to it.
  • A plethora of features (comes with its own editing software)
  • I don't know whether this can record at 60fps as I haven't tried it yet.

Meanwhile...

Editing Software:

 Sony Vegas 11,12,13.
-Not cracked, Prices at $399 or similar
-Adds tons of features, to what you can edit with, Personally i use it to create montages, etc.
-Needs at Good CPU/GPU to render a video (Heavily edited that is)
-Needs experience (Pretty easy to learn with tutorials) (If you have troubles, call me up)
-Allows great amount of work with Small to none amounts of effort at all (again skill needed).
-Cracked version, do sometimes contain viruses (Trojen, Spyware, Malware, Adware, etc)

Settings: [In progress]

Adobe AE [What Mr3FPS uses to edit]
-GREAT GREAT GREAT software to edit and render 3D models or any other Intesive edits you may use.
-Over 1000 Color corrections to choose from
-Needs a LOT of knowledge to use
-Online tutorials needed 99.9% of the time
-Non-Cracked versions start at $500 or smililar price
-NEEDS a good GPU/CPU to proccess information at what Adobe is throwing at it
-Slo-mo can be reduced to .015, Unlike Sony vegas which only allows .25
-Example of the work from a professional: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nKlBC1Wiv2Q&list=UUTI8IgoHZriuvrOzpeUuzEg&index=3
-Recommended Version: Adobe After Effects CC 2014/13.
-Excellent Rendering
-Converts Low bitrate to High Bitrate unlike Sony Vegas.

 Cinema 4D
[Info Coming Soon]

Zero's Suggestion:

 Pinnacle Studio 17:
-Use this article: http://tinyurl.com/InfoOnSofware-1

Image editors:

 PhotoShop CC
-Allows Many features, but needs knowledge to use them.
-Compared to Paint.net and GIMP, The GUI is much nicer
-Compared to Pain.net and GIMP, There are more tools to use
-Adds:
History
Paint brush
Pencil
Color finder (Identifies the color of one pixel)
and much more!
-Needs a good Rendering GPU to render 2048x2048
-Not cracked versions start at $500
-Most people use to create images they need for a YT Banner (Only with good skill)

Paint:
-Doesn't Support Transparent GUI, if you are planning to make a resource pack, use Paint.net or Gimp. (For free software)
-Not comfortable to use (From my experience)
-Free from Microsoft
-Good for editing images such as, blocking out credit card information using the brush tool
-Costs: $0
-Cant be uninstalled
-No need for a Beefy computer, The image is a raw image and does not take much time to render.

Paint.net:
-Get it here: http://www.getpaint.net/
-Costs: FREE
-Really good software, almost the new Photoshop but the GUI is terrible.
-Easy to learn, and to use, Unlike photoshop it has WAY less features (No 3D letters, 3D mode etc.)
-Compared to gimp, easier to Download and to install, as you dont need to fuss with Torrent files. (Just hit download and boom)
-Only for Windows
-Reached its standards over the years.

GIMP:
-Get it here: http://www.gimp.org/
-Cost: FREE
-Torrent download :/
-Doesnt need a good PC to render pictures.
-Very stable (Doesn't crash often, or even at all)
-Doesn't require much RAM unlike Photoshop, etc.
-File size is less than both Paint.net and Gimp
-For Windows only (I think)
-Reached its standards over the years.

For DxTory, I think it's useful to let others know that it doesn't record Skype audio :'c

cinammoncroc000 December 2, 2014 at 1:12 PM UTC

But what about Mac???

QuickTime Player

Screenflick

Screenflow
I've only tried the trial version for this, but in that short amount of time, it did seem like quite a good software to use. Of course, the price can be a bit high, but if you can afford it I'd say it would be a good investment.

I may be able to add more information once I'm back from school ;)

Thanks for this thread, it's really helped me out! ^-^ Now, I'm going to go ahead and ask a noob question... what are render settings and how do they work? x3

On a crappy PC and want to record:
Have Optifine

All animations off

Clouds+sky+particals OFF

Max framrate unlimited

Render distance not too high (I use 2 chunks)

Default texture pack or any 16x16 (or smaller)

Don't have Minecraft in full screen.

Looks ugly, but you'll get like 100+ more FPS (used to get 30 at tops, now get up to 160)

Now this isn't really editing or screen recorder related, but I guess it will make your recordings and general gameplay better.

SnowSX3 December 3, 2014 at 2:12 AM UTC

Wow!
This thread is really helpful!
Thanks!

TheMasterClock December 3, 2014 at 3:12 AM UTC

Thanks for this thread. I was thinking of getting a recording software. :D

cinammoncroc000 December 3, 2014 at 5:12 AM UTC

Thanks for putting the editing software there. Mr3FPS is a god at editing, and I hope he extends his skills to more than just Minecraft. I aspire to be like him one day...

_Phyre December 3, 2014 at 1:12 PM UTC

@Snow Thanks! I will add more and more as I go :)
@Clockracer Depends on what kind of PC you have, there are more than just those 3 recording softwares...
@Cinny Ye, He is about 600x better than me at editing in AE :P

zero9178 December 3, 2014 at 1:12 PM UTC

Wow that's actually really helpful.
I personally use Pinnacle studio 17.
It also runs great on low end CPUs.
Sadly if you have a AMD GPU it won't render, so the CPU is only rendering.

That's what I have when I don't record and I get 50fps

_Phyre December 4, 2014 at 2:12 AM UTC

Updated, now has more Photo Editing Softwares ^_^
