Name changing doesn't happen immediately, be patient.
I recommend waiting for a few days or so until the kinks have been worked out.

UPDATE: Minecraft name changing is realeased!
Here's how you change your name!
"Can I change my username?
Starting February 4th, you will be able to change a Minecraft username (this includes editing capitalization). If you sign in with your email, this feature will be available to you. If you sign in with your username, you'll need to migrate to a Mojang account. Usernames can be changed ataccount.mojang.com/me; just click the "change" link next to your name."

Mojang has officially announced on their website that name changing is set to arrive on the 4th of February.
Although Mojang are still working on it today, by this time next month, players will be able to change their name.

And here are some points I've taken from it if you don't have the time to read it.
Keep in mind, some of these points are already public knowledge but I've added them so others can know.
- Name changing available on February 4th.
- You cannot take someone's existing username.
-Once you've changed your name, you have to wait 30 days before you can change it again.
-37 days after someone has changed their name, their old one will become available for anyone to have.
-If you're banned on a server and change your name to something else, you will still remained banned on that server.
Capes.
Also, regarding capes, you need to transfer them to another account before you change your name, or else you will lose your cape.
But, you can get it back.
You have to click here and type in your email.
Note: You need to use the same email you used to buy the cape.
You will then receive an email from the Optifine guys with your new passcode.
Then log back in and type in your new passcode. Your cape should appear.

Its just going to make finding a name harder... Majority of the names won't be used again. People will be changing their names over and over again. Especially creative servers where people do RolePlay. Its a waste of names used for other Minecraft players. Soon unique names like Vapour_ or Keiji_ are gone.
