Heck yes, I'm excited for almost everything. In fact, I'm working on a map right now that utilizes most of 1.8's new features, notably the Depth Strider enchant, the Prismarine blocks, and Diorite.
I'm not excited at ALL. 1. No block hitting. I'm seriously mad that it's removed. Next, no swords because it's "too violent" 2. Name changing will confuse everyone. 3. I will have to install Optifine again. .-.
1.8 is coming out? Great. I now declare the Italic font as the sarcasm font.
I'm happy and sad about block hitting being removed, and the name changes!
I'd like to take this moment to shoot down that rumor. I'm not going to go into all the details, but "block-hitting" isn't being removed. Merely the animation for BLOCKING itself has been changed. From the first person, there is no longer a wiggling sword animation. It's more stiff. Secondly, the view of another player preforming a block has been changed. The players arm now slightly crosses over the body instead of the sword itself being crossed. With both of these animation changes, it SEEMS as though block hitting has been removed. I've run a series of tests and block hitting still does what it always has. Though I am sad that in 1.8 they have slowed down the swing time of players. Now a sword can not be swung nearly as fast as before and I feel that it will make PVP feel a bit more "slugish" to say the least.

1.8 brings what I think: -a gr8 many things -bye bye block-hitting
