Improvement as a Staff Member by twopump October 25, 2017 at 8:10 PM UTC

So I have done a little bit of thinking and have come to the decision that my moderation needs a good bit of work. As a mod I should be able to work with the community more and learn what they would want from me as a moderator (not sure if that's the best way to word this but I am running on no sleep as I type this)

So the big question and main point of this post is: What do you guys think I can do to improve my moderating? This has been a thought for a while now but at this point I feel like I should ask.

(Try to be serious with your answers, but it is fine if you have a small joke or something)

Your punishment messages are fine.
You don't need to put "Hacking" in your messages.

If you just put "Kill Aura" and nothing else, that's fine because it's common knowledge that Kill Aura is a hack.

As long as your punishment messages have the information needed to follow up with possible appeals, then you're fine.

It's not a valid point to say that not putting "Hacking" is something you need to work on because it has nothing to do with your work rate and it's irrelevant in itself.

Lol you're the only good staff member on the mod team, whatchu mean your moderating needs work?

Don't stay up late, or put moderating over real life, school or otherwise. I did the exact same thing and it got me next to nowhere in a year. I started to focus more on real-life things, moderate when I could and wanted to, and I got 2 promotions way faster than I expected. Obviously, this may not be the same for everyone, but something that you can definitely work on is not spending too much time on Avicus.

I'd also encourage you to get involved in another area of the staff team. This shows that you can handle more work than you are doing, and if you can do both very well, that's even better. I personally didn't do this for a long time because I didn't learn XML, and I wasn't very good at making maps to be a Map Dev/Builder and I had no interest or skills anywhere else. Find something you enjoy and take the time to learn it, it's worth the time and fun doing it. :)

For the ban messages, I don't use the "Hacking - " bit because well, it isn't needed. From what I was told since my junior mod trial that as long is it kept consistent and says what is needed, it works just as well as the little "Hacking -" part

As for maturity, not going to lie I can be a goof when I shouldn't be, so I will take this into account :)

As much as I appreciate the compliment, I personally think that most other mods are 10 times better than me. More likable maybe but as for 'good' as in quality, I wouldn't make this post if I thought I was good. :D

The main reason I wrote that bit was to give a reason for any grammatical errors as I get annoyed when I do that. As for prioritising minecraft over real life: WHO DO YOU THINK YOU ARE TO TELL ME THAT! Nah just kidding but on a serious note the only reason I said that is because I was awake since 12 am to what WAS about 4 or 5 pm; and obviously with school and having Firefighter stuff to do I will be tired. In the past I have been a little stupid to put videos games first but I have been getting way better at it. Nowadays I moderate when I feel like I can have fun playing on Avicus or if I get bored of PotPvP or railing people on Hypixel (4k on classic duels guys!) so I guess thats better than feeling forced to do a volunteer job.

As for getting involved with another area of the staff team, I could for sure handle having one or two more ranks, but to be fair I can't translate anything unless you want it in better english. For Referee, I am not going to put myself in a position where I feel like I wouldn't do much in or feel at all interestedin (this isn't to knock on those who are referees of course) and as for Builder.... HAAHHAHAAHAH no. I can barely even build a half decent house on singleplayer.

I naturally stay up that late anyways, but yeah I get my stuff together. Ill do it eventually #snapchatevidence

EncryptedShoesHD October 26, 2017 at 2:10 PM UTC

Don't be such a noob, Henry.

Jks, ily :D Anyways, you should not prioritise Minecraft over real life. It's hard to tell you how to improve your moderation, since you're already good enough, but I can try. A great way of improving your moderation is to lead the team, suggest new ideas that could hopefully improve the server and gaming experience on here. Also, as Miicah already said, you should really work on getting involved on another part of the staff team.

I don't really know what to say xd
Have fun,

I appreciate the love, and I have already done a lot with prioritising my life over Minecraft (I think). As for leading the team, I would gladly do that but sometimes, and I know it sounds kind of bad, I have 0 clue on what is even going on. Saying that, it is not exactly the best idea to try and lead the team when I haven't a clue on what I am doing. As for suggesting new ideas and improving the server, I could for sure do that (that isn't to say I won't work on leading the team though). As for the last bit, I would love to work in other areas of the staff team but not only do some seem not that appealing to me, it is also that I don't think I have any sort of skill besides being able to moderate a minecraft server that would benefit any other part of the staff team but maybe some day down the line I will branch out :)

Maybe you should comment on your appeal/escalate or contact a senior.

Stop complaining about it and actually do something.

I'm going to bring up the elephant in the room.

Making this thread does not reflect the staff team in a good light- virtually no other server would have moderators cling to the community on how to recognize their own flaws, when self-reflection should be an imminent trait once you become moderator. So, I choose to skim past that: I see that making such a thread makes you look insecure about your moderation, and furthermore in my perspective this is more or less a pull for attention to show the community that you actually want to do something to improve, yet you can't quite diagnose those issues yourself.

Considering the point that there's a lot of moderators and almost no senior mods, there is the chance that this thread was made to possibly have you look as to fill a vacancy within the team. If you get senior- congratulations! But I feel that you shouldn't be worried about the basics of being a moderator, and rather ask the question to yourself: How can I go beyond being a moderator? How can I exceed the senior's standards?

Your responses seem like "I can do that" (in response to suggesting better things for the server) and "I would gladly do that" (taking leadership initiative), but those should be givens. They should be things you're already doing as a representative of the server.

If you ask me, since you want my opinion: you should just straight up ask the seniors for feedback, if they have any from paying attention to you. Ask them to be blunt, upfront and honest about their opinions of you and how you do. Don't take "well" for an answer.

Sorry if this is too harsh, but I just don't like the concept of this thread.

could've also just asked this question in the #mooderators channel in discord considering that basically the only people giving ""actual""" answers are also moderators

twopump October 30, 2017 at 6:10 PM UTC

I would reply to each of the points you've made but I'd rather not type out something that is way too long to read. In no way what you said was harsh since you are only giving an opinion, which is what I was expecting from making this post. From here on I'll work on improvement to being beyond a moderator rather than just as a moderator as you said (assuming I read it right). Thank you for your input :) I know I may have not had the best reply but if there is anything you want me to bring up I wil gladly do it.
