Ping vs. Skill by cinammoncroc000 August 28, 2014 at 12:08 AM UTC

I've seen a lot of discussions and arguments around this topic.

As a person with a relatively good ping (rarely goes above 80 ms) I get accused a lot on PvP servers, including Avicus, for being "all ping" and having "no skill." It saddens me because I truly do try my hardest to the best I can be, however with people saying I "abuse ping" it is hard to do such a thing. I look at guides, watch and analyze other's videos, and practice in order to see what to improve on. I truly strive to prove to others that, just because someone has a good ping, doesn't mean they "suck."

However, after a recent experience, I questioned myself whether I, indeed, overestimated by abilities.
As I was uploading a fairly lengthy video to YouTube, my ping raised on a soup server from 36ms to 120ms. I found most of my hits not connecting, my soup lagging, and the problems I've heard from people who don't have the greatest ping. In all, I lost 34 fights and won zero. It truly got me questioning whether I indeed abuse my ping, and that I have no skill at all?
After the video was done, my ping returned to normal. But I still couldn't forget that.

Maybe I just need to become more accustomed to a lower ping. Maybe I was unlucky, and everyone I faced was more skilled than I. Or maybe, just maybe, I'm overreacting to an event that, in reality, has no meaning.

Normally I'd just erase this after writing it, but I want to see your thoughts over this Ping vs. Skill thing that I've been hearing about.
And please, don't create a too heated argument. I don't want to burn anything down with a flame war ;)

With skill.. your ping doesnt really matter, it really depends on how you react to the lag or whatever.... I play on hive (237ms) and i win a lot of the games... (On my alt).
All you need to do is get used to what you've got with resources.. I mean if you were thrown in the woods to live in real life what would you do?... Get used to it. Same with ping whilst pvping. And if it REALLY bugs you, use a "Ping decreasing" software such as "PingBase" Pretty sure its discontinues tho.. But all it does is block all the un-necessary servers, and allows the flow from your computer to the server host you want it to connect with, run more smoothly :)

Don't listen to what people say.  All that matters is that you are having fun and getting growing in pvp.  People are just getting mad because you are beating them in fights.  Just keep doing what you are doing.

Well, even though you have good ping, you still need skills to use that. I would say it is 30% ping, and 70% skills. Just my opinion.

32.4%Ping, 67.6%Skill. (My opinion)

i have seen people fight really good at 500ms. They are even better than me. Ping does not really make a lot of skill. If you are know where you are going, know what to do, and anticipate your oponent's next move, yo should be fine with high ping. Ofcourse, 10000ms is ridiculous doe.

The only gamemode (so far what i seen) that is ping based is Rage

120ms isn't bad at all, its what I usually get and my hits register fine

build_high August 28, 2014 at 6:08 AM UTC

Ping can make a big difference with hits registering, I get roughly 480ms to avicus and quite a few of my hits won't connect, when I play an au server I get a ping of 18, with that I get a few more hits which makes a big difference.

Oh and, I don't think you are a "ping abuser". I believe you are a legitimately good player with good ping.

I have 400ms and 40 fps atm and I know I can still beat everyone on avicus. You haven't adjusted to a lower ping, it simply does make you better.

People adapt to their ping. I am Australian. I play better on US servers than Australian servers because I have adapted my pvp style around my ping.

Well I have respect for people who have good ping but are modest but I hate it when someone doesn't strafe, combo or use any tactic and beats you in a 1v1 because there ping is so good and they say "omg ezpz nub"

Dat's annoying .-.

If you have good ping there is honestly nothing you can do about being called a ping abuser. If I see someone has good ping, sometimes I might point it out but I certainly don't give them hate. If someone calls you a ping abuser again either ignore it or come back at them with a 'smartish' comment like: 'Jealous?' or something like that.

I have a 140 ping to the server yet I can just run past ppl with better ping when attacking. Same for OITN games. I always go on a 5 kill streak which is all skill with 140 ping

Man don't worry about it. When I faced you on that soup server a while ago you weren't lagging whatsoever and still completely kicked my ass! lol
