• I covered the monument in obsidian first, on all sides, you find the obsidian by the iron behind spawn. Tell me who would mine multiple blocks of obsidian without getting noticed?
  
• I covered the obsidian in soul sand and put trap doors on all sides, so you need an axe too, as you don't spawn with an axe you probably didn't craft one either. You can't spam blocks all around you if you would get to it by skybridging as you can't place blocks on the trap doors.
  
• Below the monument I placed wooden slabs, as you know, you can't pillar up on these and they are more effective than pressure plates as a pressure plate is mined in a second or two.
• If you look behind me, you will see I placed trap doors on the wall too, and wooden slabs above it. As you can't pillar on a trap door you will not be able to do pillar to the monument. 
• You don't need to cover your monument, it should always be fully visible as an example on my picture.
  

Relatively good defense, but if a person comes with a spanky spade, you're screwed.

Hahaha nah, I don't see how a "spanky spade" would remove the wooden slabs, trap doors and the multiple layers of obsidian. Of course, you would be able to remove the soul sand quicker, but you will at least be up there 3 - 4 minutes before you get to the actual monument and somebody will see you in that amount of time.

I can't make a defense half the time because other kids decide to ruin it, or think that they are "helping it" when they just make it worse.

Yea it did, but it went along faster when other people started to help me and puffy fill in everything. I put new defences there too if you wanted to take a look at them :D

Just because JKawesome didn't approve my last defence, I did it again and better this time. xD (We actually won too.)

• Our monument is covered in obsidian, two obsidian blocks above and two below, plus one block on each side.
  
• I placed trap doors and wooden slabs on every side as you can't spam blocks on trap doors/wooden slabs and you don't spawn with an axe, so you won't think of crafting one either.
• I mined the ground below the monument a couple blocks so you can't reach the monument if you stand underneath it, same as last time, I put wooden slabs just because you can't place blocks on these and you don't spawn with an axe.
  
• I changed the wall behind me to wood and placed trap doors, in order for you to bridge to the monument you must mine the wood by hand without getting noticed.
• If you mined the wood successfully without getting noticed, your mission is to mine the trapdoors and/or slabs plus two blocks of obsidian before you get to the monument, then you need to destroy the monument too. I'm up to 90% sure you will not make it without getting noticed.

How did you get so much obsidian? there is only 1 monument before it breaks all

OCN style

This is my basic defence without buttons or pressure plates, it's pretty bad. I use it on quintus and ternio, maybe senex because those defences are small and easy to defend on. Kinda.
