Do not bump old topics by MTINC November 4, 2014 at 10:11 PM UTC

This page is probably going to get locked, but l' d like some answers.I created a page a while ago and a mod came in and locked it because he said "do not bump old topics".What does this mean?

Joao_Victor November 4, 2014 at 10:11 PM UTC

Posting on a thread that hasn't been posted on in at least a month with a reply that doesn't contribute to the original topic.

Mooch24 November 4, 2014 at 10:11 PM UTC

it means to post on an old topic and not contribute anything. if the post is dead or if its an already answered question thats also a no no.

Umm... by reading the thread...?

I can detect something in this... well... um.

Its sort of based off of common sense to tell how old it can be.

Bumping a topic IMO, is saying something completely unrelated to an old topic. But according to everyone else, its posting something on an old topic; relevant or otherwise.

So i guess, yeah. If the topic was unanswered or if its like a thing similar to maps then you can post updates or ask for answers... relevant to the topic.

But why would the page have to be locked? I mean... It was not hate material or anything...

someone should bump this topic in a month, the irony would be great

No it wouldn't.

We are trying to limit the amount of people continuously bumping it.

MidnightBeats November 5, 2014 at 6:11 AM UTC

Bumping is a constant issue on the forums, mainly because it takes up unwanted space and creates spam.

If we notice a thread starts to become spammy or is bumped with a message that is completely irrelevant to the topic, it will be locked.

SnowSX3 November 5, 2014 at 6:11 AM UTC

-Bumping a topic with relevent comments is OK.
-Bumping a topic with irrelevent comments is not OK.

-Also, bumping a topic that has become stale, or if the question has already been answered and you bump it, the thread will be locked regardless if you're on-topic or not.

That's it really. There is no other reason why a thread should be locked via bumping.

I get that, but WHY is it necessary for it to get locked?

Dude, the very comment you're replying to just literally explained the whole problem.  If someone types in a 'bump' comment, it just an obnoxious thing to do. (Assuming they know what a 'bumb' is) If someone bumps a topic, it puts that topic to the top of the 'Recent Discussions' category on the forums list. If there are topics that do not have relevant posts, but are still considered 'Recent Discussions', it is in in the staff's best interest to lock the topic, before more unrelated comments are posted, and the topic becomes spammy. Lock's are issued because if people were still interested in the topic, people would've been commenting on it before it was outdated, and a new post would be considered a 'bump'. Bringing up an old topic that people are not interested takes up space on the forums from topics that are actually still interested.

*Cue the 'The more you know' please*

Suit yourself, this forum would be all over the place if they didn't lock topics.

just like this thread

if i was to bump this in a few months answering the question again it would be next to useless.

If someone bumps it and the thread is already resolved/answered then there isn't really a point to the thread since more people will just bump it in the future.
