Allow Personal Updates. by Cyclops May 12, 2015 at 3:05 PM UTC

Just discuss. Im all for this, and have my reasons for this, but I can't post them now, I'll do it later.

What do you think?

Let me post a quick reason...
The forums are already boring as it is, and it would be nice to have conversation regarding how people are, and the situations they're in, etc...
Locking a happy birthday post, like seriously.

I'm on for your idea, but the forums might be spammed with personal updates.

A personal update shouldn't be considered "spam".
If you mean constant posting like it's Twitter, that's just general spam.

Some People will embarrass, shame, or directly hurt others. The last thing we need are flame wars concerning issues that don't even have to do with the Avicus community.

Personal Updates aren't a bad idea don't get me wrong . But it will be annoying if people start creating drama here on the forums.

Then where would it be?
Absurd if you're considering having a separate sub-forum for it.

It would be like the teams section. It won't appear on recent discussions but it is on the forums

That's why there are staff members who can forum ban ones who are rude to others.

And hell, we need Drama.
You may find it annoying, but a few arguments/debates here and there is what keeps a forum going (unless it doesn't go out of hand).

Like stated, forum is already boring as it is.

Off-Topic...
You would tag it with 'Personal Updates'.

Of course "Off-topic"
I just oppose the fact that you have to tag it and it won't show in the recent discussions.
Personal updates can be discussions, hence "Recent Discussions".

vladthegreat100 May 12, 2015 at 4:05 PM UTC

I like. You get to learn more about the members of this community. The post about getting suspended is a good example. We learnt new things about the players and was able to comfort the creator of the post by giving our past experiences. Like Cyclops said, the forums are really boring right now, it's full of forum games that get boring after a while

Tarheelkiwi May 12, 2015 at 4:05 PM UTC

I agree.  It's hard enough to make a post about something that is bad about your life let alone a staff member locking the thread saying that it's unnecessary.  We are a helpful community full of love and support and not allowing these types of threads is awful.

Robin_DD_J May 12, 2015 at 4:05 PM UTC

Add a new section like the looking for teams section.

Common staff.. we already have tons of useless posts in the forums (AMAs, etc) so why can't we have a section made for personal updates then?

I would like this to happen. It really should be global though, it would spice the forums up. Ending the cycle of forum games.

PokerFace May 12, 2015 at 7:05 PM UTC

Yea an AMA is a personal post.

It's all or nothing. Allow all or, don't allow any or, set specific standards.

Mehrp May 12, 2015 at 7:05 PM UTC

I think its nice, makes the forum active and such but at the same time you should have it within reasonable limits or it'd be spammy

steven5703 May 12, 2015 at 8:05 PM UTC

I think they're fine as long as the post is focused around a discussion and not 100% attention seeking.

PieZ May 12, 2015 at 8:05 PM UTC

Can we have a section on the forums for that. Where it doesn't show up on the main feed like the Team forums don't

DaGoldBrick May 12, 2015 at 8:05 PM UTC

The the moderators and users properly take a look at the rules...

"Discussions surrounding personal updates, accomplishments or events is frowned upon as they are meant to be inclusive rather than oriented around a single person. Punishments for this will only be distributed in the event that a user continuously uses the forums for this purpose alone".

Edit: They're allowed, sure, but don't abuse the privilege by making topics like "i got an a on my math test, yay" or "3,000 credits, wow such accomplishment".

Shouldn't this be allowed than? https://avicus.net/forums/dcacdc919
Yes, it may have been attention seeking at the start, but it clearly looks like he needs support from the community, and the community did better, we supported him but also showed him that a lot of us were in the same situation and shouldn't be too worried while we learnt new things of each other & bonded more than just simple forum game.

Dont forget that.

Arent both of these allowed then?
Also, in the thread above, Flu and Snow let it slide, while Ambi took charge?
Why is that?

Atrocious if staff doesn't know the rules they are supposed to enforce.

Most personal discussions should be allowed, but like you said, this isn't Twitter.

This is beyond just "hopelessly pathetic"... I've always been led to believe that the "official" rules page was obsolete and frivolous, considering — time and time again — its content has been referenced as argumentative evidence, yet ultimately struck down for being irrelevant or outdated. Now, this was all the result of misinformation? It's even worse when people smugly reference that one rule concerning self-centered discussion, with complete disregard to the sentence you stressed in bold; I thought the rule, in its entirety, was perspicuous enough for the common player (or a typical staff member) to understand. Apparently not.

So, I guess the community has some studying to do...?
