Microsoft bought Mojang for $2.5 Billion by Derumisis September 15, 2014 at 6:09 PM UTC

Yes, the deal is real. Mojang is being bought by Microsoft. It was reassuring to see how many of your opinions mirrored those of the Mojangstas when we heard the news. Change is scary, and this is a big change for all of us. It’s going to be good though. Everything is going to be OK. <3

Please remember that the future of Minecraft and you – the community – are extremely important to everyone involved. If you take one thing away from this post, let it be that.We can only share so much information right now, but we’ve decided that being as honest as possible is the best approach. We’re still working a lot of this stuff out. Mega-deals are serious business.

Why did you sell Minecraft?

Minecraft has grown from a simple game to a project of monumental significance. Though we’re massively proud of what Minecraft has become, it was never Notch’s intention for it to get this big.
As you might already know, Notch is the creator of Minecraft and the majority shareholder at Mojang. He’s decided that he doesn’t want the responsibility of owning a company of such global significance. Over the past few years he’s made attempts to work on smaller projects, but the pressure of owning Minecraft became too much for him to handle. The only option was to sell Mojang. He’ll continue to do cool stuff though. Don’t worry about that. There are only a handful of potential buyers with the resources to grow Minecraft on a scale that it deserves. We’ve worked closely with Microsoft since 2012, and have been impressed by their continued dedication to our game and its development. We’re confident that Minecraft will continue to grow in an awesome way.Minecraft means many different things to millions of people across the world, and to each and every Mojangsta. We feel that this is the best way for everyone – you guys included – to benefit.

What about the other editions of Minecraft? Will they stop being developed?

There’s no reason for the development, sales, and support of the PC/Mac, Xbox 360, Xbox One, PS3, PS4, Vita, iOS, and Android versions of Minecraft to stop. Of course, Microsoft can’t make decisions for other companies or predict the choices that they might make in the future.
We’re extremely proud of all editions and the awesome things you have achieved through playing together.

Is the game going to change? Will we still be able to make videos, mods, awesome builds, and all the cool stuff we’ve created over the past few years?

Minecraft will continue to evolve, just like it has since the start of development. We don’t know specific plans for Minecraft’s future yet, but we do know that everyone involved wants the community to grow and become even more amazing than it’s ever been. Stopping players making cool stuff is not in anyone’s interests.

What about the Mojang staff? What’s happening to you guys?

Though it’s too early to confirm which of us will continue working on Minecraft or other projects, we predict that the vast majority (if not all) Mojangstas will continue to work at Mojang for the time being.
The founders: Notch, Carl, and Jakob are leaving. We don’t know what they’re planning. It won’t be Minecraft-related but it will probably be cool.

What’s happening to the other Mojang projects, like Scrolls?

We don’t know yet. We’ll share any news as soon as we do.

Will you still be able to tweet about features and interact with the community on a personal level, just like you’ve done over the years?

Yes! That’s not going to change.

How much money was the company bought for?

Microsoft acquired Mojang for a smooth 2.5 BILLION dollars.

Thanks for reading everybody.

Why would u copy everything and just paste it?

MidnightBeats September 15, 2014 at 6:09 PM UTC

I'm worried about the future for Minecraft ._.

Arachadonic September 15, 2014 at 7:09 PM UTC

Microsoft know how to handle their shit. If they just let the Mojang people stay on and keep doing what they are doing than it will be grand.

Emmaye September 15, 2014 at 7:09 PM UTC

RIP Mojang
But I think Microsoft will do a better job

Soo No more EULA? or does the EULA still count for this q_Q

Refisio September 15, 2014 at 7:09 PM UTC

Soo No more EULA? or does the EULA still count for this q_Q
Well, EULA is the creation of Mojang that says, "Hey! You can't do certain things involving money!"

Since Mojang is only being bought by Microsoft (not actually dissolving into Microsoft completely), you most likely won't find the EULA leaving any time soon.

Have faith, though.

THANK YOU!!!! Mojang was ruining the game at the start of 1.7 and now no block-hitting makes it worse...

Hope Microsoft can make something better of the game.

Oh dear god... If we have to buy something for multiplayer, see ya.

Porkyyy September 15, 2014 at 9:09 PM UTC

Oh dear god... If we have to buy something for multiplayer, see ya.
We each bought accounts so that we can use Multiplayer. I'm sure that they won't make us buy another thing on top of the $25 account (or however much it is worth now).

_BillGates September 15, 2014 at 9:09 PM UTC

Microsoft will probably not take 300 days to make another update...

Hete September 15, 2014 at 9:09 PM UTC

I hope that Microsoft does a better job then Mojang managing their game.

I don't see anything wrong with it. Honestly, I didn't even know that information was on the official Minecraft website xD
He's just giving us the information so we don't have to go through other websites to find it.

Why not? It is true information, and it would be better telling what was posted exactly from Mojang.

ballzi September 15, 2014 at 10:09 PM UTC

BourbonBonobo September 16, 2014 at 5:09 AM UTC

Microsoft always messes stuff up. Why didn't apple buy it? apple makes things better!

Emmaye September 16, 2014 at 6:09 AM UTC

Minecraft 2, only on Kinect!
This is probably going to happen, lol

Eklip_Z September 16, 2014 at 7:09 AM UTC

No, unfortunately Bukkit will seize to exist after 1.8. The reason being is just because the Bukkit owner has given up. Servers will have to find a new way to get plugins in future.

faissaloo September 16, 2014 at 7:09 AM UTC

Microsoft may have bought Minecraft BUT WE STILL OWN MINECRAFT #SaveMinecraft

Lawl September 16, 2014 at 7:09 AM UTC

Hmmm.. http://pastebin.com/je56Nyg2

Not too sure whether this whole Microsoft deal is positive, or negative.

RCMP_Mountie September 16, 2014 at 7:09 AM UTC

Unless Mojang- Erm, Microsoft wants to do something about it after Mojang bought Bukkit 2 years ago.

We'll see how Microsoft will do in the long term.

Cyclops September 16, 2014 at 1:09 PM UTC

Nintendo.. Save us.

YTMangoYT September 16, 2014 at 1:09 PM UTC

im i dreaming $2.5 BILLION

toketrain September 16, 2014 at 2:09 PM UTC

they're gonna ruin it. look at the xbox version. "pay $3 for a skin pack" or whatever the hell it is. if they bring that to the pc, they're gonna ruin it.

Notalgicular September 16, 2014 at 2:09 PM UTC

Im pretty sure the purchased mojang not minecraft so mojang will still dev it.

CelestrianIX October 2, 2014 at 5:10 AM UTC

Dinnerbone himself said he will personally see to Bukkit being updated for 1.8, however that's only the near future solution. If there's going to be a microsoft dev team to continue or produce a company owned program that does the same as Bukkit would, I do not know. I mean I've been talking extensively about this update with Jarrey123 and He told me that bukkit going down meant multiplayer would be going down, mods would be rendered exclusive to 1.7-  and how the only pc minecrafters that might possibly benefit from it all are the ones that love survival single player. I'm slowly getting used to the Idea of Mojang and Microsoft being the reason for the future of minecraft and I do also hope that it heads in a positive direction.
